King of Saudi Arabia from 1953 to 1964. During his short reign King Saud managed to achieve a lot, proving himself an able administrator. He created the Council of Ministers, the ministries of health, education and commerce. Of particular note is his contribution towards the spread of literacy and higher education in the Kingdom. The King Saud University was established by him in 1957. King Saud also reached out globally to forge relations with other countries, becoming the first Saudi monarch to visit the United States. In 1962 he chaired a historic International Islamic conference that was the precursor to the present-day World Muslim League headquartered in Makkah.
